A recent study of 68,000 subjects on the physical effects of stress found that even mild anxiety, depression, and moderate stress can increase risk of death by 43%.  Severe stress may increase risk of death by 94% and chronic stress (over a 20 year period) increases death risk by 50%. To maximize health, minimize stress with exercise, meditation, yoga, prayer, family down time, hot baths, or any other healthy, relaxing activity that relieves stress.

Stress has a devastating effect on our biochemistry, leading to a predictable chain reaction of events that often result in some form of chronic disease.  To maximize health (by minimizing disease) make a conscious decision to learn relaxation strategies (meditation, prayer, biofeedback, Emotional Freedom Technique, yoga, etc.) and practice these techniques regularly with intent of breaking the cycle that leads to disease.

Studies show that consuming liquids with meals dilutes stomach acid and enzyme activity making digestion much more difficult.  It is optimal to drink water between meals, at least 30 minutes prior to eating, and at least 1 hour after.  Drinking water about 30 minutes before a meal may be helpful with weight loss, to create a sense of fullness.  Drinking water in the evening (after meals) may also help prevent night-time snacking.

Studies show that deep emotional trauma, like the death of a loved one, really can break your heart.  The chance of having a heart attack the day after the death of a significant other increases by 21%, and remains increased above 6% for the next week, probably due to stress hormones and their effect on the heart.  When emotional trauma strikes, take extra care with yourself and rest, find emotional support, eat well, exercise, find an emotional release, and be aware that your heart really is vulnerable after emotional trauma.
