To maximize health, avoid processed foods with labels, especially if there are more than three ingredients, or if there are ingredients that sound like chemical compounds.  Consider switching to a fresh food diet to maximize health.

Tumeric (curcumin) has anti-inflammatory properties, which are beneficial in preventing Alzheimer's Disease and Coronary Artery Disease.  Many Indian dishes contain Tumeric, and the incidence of cardiovascular disease is much lower in that country.  Consider cooking with Tumeric, or add it as a supplement if needed to improve cardiovascular health.

Most foods produced today have significantly less nutrients than those produced even 50 years ago due to soil depletion and non-sustainable farming methods.  Studies confirm that most Americans are deficient in at least one vitamin or mineral.  Buy organic foods as much as possible to compensate for this decline in nutrients.

Most cooking spices have been providing medicinal benefits for thousands of years, and are a healthy addition to the diet.  Consider replacing sugar and salt with spices like basil, black pepper, cloves, coriander, cinnamon, ginger, garlic, mint, red chili pepper, and rosemary.

Health specialists as myself  recommend consuming at least 6-8 eight-ounce glasses of filtered water daily, to prevent dehydration.  In warm weather when activity levels are high, or when detoxing or dieting, consider consuming up to one ounce of water for every 2 pounds of body weight, as long as kidney function is normal.

Fever is one of the body's strongest immune system responses to infection from viruses, bacteria, or parasites.  Most fevers are self-limiting, so when risk of febrile seizure is minimal, consider allowing fever to take it's course (up to 104 degrees) for more rapid illness recovery.  Use of fever reducers may lengthen recovery time by reducing immune system effectiveness.

Vitamin A is a fat-soluble antioxidant, which is essential for an effective immune system (fighting colds and infection), and effective eyesight.  Consider increasing Vitamin A by consuming foods with carotenoids like carrots, spinach, bell peppers, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, and kale or by consuming Vitamin A or beta carotene supplements.

Vitamin E is a powerful fat-soluble antioxidant, which also helps to rejuvenate Vitamin C.  Consider adding a Vitamin E supplement to maximize health, but be sure it is in the d-alpha tocopherol form, and not the synthetic dl-alpha tocopherol form.

For my clients  who have a difficult time getting to sleep- moderate exercise throughout the day improves sleep quality, as long as it's not too close to bedtime.  A glass of wine, or warm milk can take the edge off and improve relaxation.  Tart (unsweetened) cherry juice 2 times per day increases melatonin naturally, which improves sleep quality.  Warm baths, meditation, deep breathing, and reading may all provide relaxation in preparation for sleep.  Snack on small portions of protein at least 3 hours before bed, avoiding stimulating carbs and caffeine.

Bananas are an amazing food.  They contain many nutrients including Vitamin A, the B Vitamins, Vitamin C, magnesium, calcium, potassium, and selenium.  They also contain tryptophan, dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine - all essential to neurotransmitter function in the brain promoting calmness, decreasing depression, and enhancing memory.  Consider adding bananas to the diet to fulfill one of the 10 servings of daily fruits and vegetables.

Since both bad bacteria and cancer thrive in an acid environment, test your own acid/alkaline balance in saliva and urine with over the counter p.H. strips.  Optimal ranges are between 6.5 and 7.5 taken first thing in the morning before breakfast.  If measurements are out of range, consider decreasing starchy carbs, sugar, meats and dairy and increasing whole, organic fruits and veggies.  Also, increasing oxygenation through moderate daily exercise supports a more alkaline system.

Why is it that some people never get sick even though everyone around is?  One theory explaining this phenomenon is that a strong immune system is the key to ultimate wellness.  Since 70% of immune system function occurs in a balanced gut, consider adding fermented foods with enzymes and probiotics to increase immune system function.

Overstimulation of the adrenal glands from consuming too much sugar, coffee, tea, soda, and other stimulants combined with a stressful lifestyle may lead to adrenal fatigue.  It often takes extended nutritional and herbal therapy to repair the damage.  If you find yourself unable to function without stimulants, consider reviewing your diet and lifestyle and correcting the situation before the body forces you to through breakdown and illness.

Rather than taking over the counter medications to mask the symptoms of illnesses like headaches, stomach pain, or cold symptoms, examine closely the factors that might be causing these reactions and seek to eliminate the true source of the problem for optimal long-term results.  Lifestyle changes like getting more rest, avoiding junk foods, or reducing stress will often eliminate the true source of ongoing health issues, and may produce more pleasant results than perpetually band aiding recurring symptoms.

All calories are not metabolized equally in the body.  Sugars and starches are metabolized with insulin, when it is working properly.  If insulin resistance has developed due to overconsumption of carbohydrate calories, insulin is not able to deliver glucose to the cells for energy effectively and instead stores it immediately as fat.  If you carry excess body fat, a sign of insulin resistance, consider cutting back on sugars and starchy carbs and increasing exercise to bypass ineffective insulin response and subsequent fat storage.

Resveratrol (found in red wine and grapes) is a powerful antioxidant.  It strengthens the immune system, helps control blood lipid levels and may have anti-aging properties.  Consider adding a resveratrol supplement to increase antioxidant strength, or add more grapes, wine and raisins to the diet.

Rotating and stretching every joint daily keeps them lubricated, and helps prevent injury.  Start at one end of your body and work your way to the other end stretching and moving every joint, especially before exercising or when under stress.

The lymph system, like the bloodstream, carries larger sized nutrients throughout the body, and helps remove waste products.  However, there is no "heart" to pump lymph, it moves only when the body moves or "exercises".  Without movement, lymph stagnates, and the body becomes poisoned.  So get that lymph moving for a healthy body!

Work to decrease your bowel transit time (time between bowel movements).  A healthy bowel moves after every large meal, a minimum of once a day.  The longer food remains in the digestive tract, the greater the chance of fermentation, putrification, and toxin absorption.  Consume natural, whole, raw, high fiber, organic fruits and veggies to keep things moving.

In a healthy person, fasting one day a week allows the digestive system to rest, rejuvenate, and detoxify.  It also reduces caloric intake, but not enough to significantly reduce metabolism.  Consider fasting (water and juices allowed) for one day a week (or even one day a month) if not contraindicated by illness or weakness to maximize health.
